Beef on Weck

Williamsville, New York

When we set out on trips I have always researched things to do or places to eat.  On this trip I have utilized 3-4 "Food" books to scout out regional specialties and where the best can be found.  In Buffalo, NY wings of course are a specialty, but the area is also know for it's "Beef on Weck".

Buffalo sampler with Beef on Weck and buffalo wings.

Beef on Weck is carved roast beef on a kummelweck roll.  The "weck" roll is sprinkled liberally with pretzel salt and lightly with caraway seeds.  Supposedly it was heavy on the salt to make those eating the sandwich thirsty which would result in selling more beer!  The top of the roll is dipped in the au jus of beef and served with pickle and horseradish.

Italian Sausage with coleslaw.

Buffalo Brew Pub

We ate at the Buffalo Brew Pub which offered a sampler of buffalo wings and a mini weck sandwich which I had and Gene had an Italian sausage sandwich.  I must say that the buffalo wings were the best I've ever had and the Beef on Weck was very tasty!  Gene enjoyed his spicy sausage sandwich but also enjoyed some of my sampler.
